About the Artist

Anthony was born on Long Island in 1956. He grew up in South Hempstead and was a fullback for Southside High School’s football team. He attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy for marine engineering before deciding to make a career in photography.
He started as an amateur photographer, but soon began to train with the best in the field--working as an assistant in NYC’s commercial photo studios until 1980. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute under Pirkle Jones, a former apprentice of Ansel Adams, where he was encouraged to become a fine art photographer.
Throughout the 1980’s Anthony worked as a commercial and medical photographer, while also following the advice of his teacher, Mr. Jones, and exhibiting his personal work in solo and group exhibits in New York, Long Island and San Francisco.
In 2004 Anthony moved to Water Mill, Southampton and returned with new resolve to his artistic endeavors creating and exhibiting his artistic photography.
Artist Statement
The first two photography books I purchased were Walker Evans’ “American Photographs” and Wright Morriss' “Words and Images”. I fell in love with the directness of the images and the beautiful black and white contrasts. After being exposed to the west coast photographers Ansel Adams and Cole Weston, I learned about controlling the tones and preconceiving the outcome of my images.
Today my work is in color, but applies those same concepts of tonality and directness. As a photographer I bring together the documentation of the time and place that I photograph while controlling the tones and colors to deliver an image that is more than a mere record.
